About the partner

The Baltic Institute of Finland (BIF) is a non-profit foundation-based organisation promoting cooperation and partnerships around the Baltic Sea Region and throughout Europe. BIF ensures design and management of competitive international projects in various fields with confidentiality, transparency and strong expert competence.

Role in the project

In BALTIC BIRD, the Baltic Institute of Finland – involving and representing Tampere airport – acts as a coordinator of the work package 3 that deals with "Passenger Potential Analysis".  The institute is also responsible for carrying out regional project activities in Tampere Region, as well as for coordinating the joint activities of Finnish partners.

Furthermore, BIF provides the whole project consortium with extensive networks and experience in Baltic Sea Region (BSR) cooperation. BIF will disseminate project results and market project activities in different BSR networks and projects, and within the framework of the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

About the partner

The Regional Council of North Karelia (RCNK) is a regional authority, responsible for: economic development, regional planning, safeguarding of regional interests and creation of the knowledge infrastructure. The need to form a sustainable model to ensure transportation services is vital in both.

Role in the project

The RCNK contributes to BALTIC BIRD, e.g. by involving Joensuu airport and transferring know-how/ best practices. The Council also has interregional networks for cooperation combining public/ private sector that can be utilised in project implementation as dissemination channels.

RCNK shall utilise project results in Transportation Structure Plan of North Karelia. Also the best practices found in BALTIC BIRD shall be introduced to whole region of East Finland and goal is that BALTIC BIRD would at its own part help to create a new brand “Lakeland Airports”. Results will be also presented in national level and the aim is also to influence national legislation in this field.

Savonlinna Business Services is responsible in the Savonlinna Region (Finland) for economic policy/ development and improving accessibility of the region for the benefit of businesses. Savonlinna Business Services cooperates with the city of Savonlinna in order to develop air traffic in Savonlinna. Savonlinna city is responsible of managing subsidy for air traffic via PSO status. Savonlinna Business Services is participating in Finnish national centres of expertise programme in tourism/ experience management where Savonlinna has concentration of expertise in eTourism.

Role in the project

In BALTIC BIRD, Savonlinna Business Services involves Savonlinna airport and is participating in route potential analyses, airport and air travel marketing schemes, investigating alternatives for supporting air traffic and PSO tendering. Savonlinna Business Services is prepared to share the networks of expertise of the Tourism and Experience Management Cluster (centres of expertise) in service design and experiences in running PSO.

Jyväskylä Regional Development Company Jykes Ltd. (Jykes) is a business development company owned by four municipalities in the Jyväskylä Region of Central Finland. Jykes is responsible for the regional economic development and operates as a link between companies, local government and other regional players.

Role in the project

Jykes has extensive experience on EU-funded projects and is currently implementing regionally strategic Jyväskylä Airport development project. In addition, Jykes has long experience in developing service and tourism sector.

Jykes has a keen interest to develop the accessibility of the region. Therefore, Jykes participates in BALTIC BIRD actions improving the accessibility by air, in promoting supportive marketing strategies and especially in developing tourism destinations. Jykes sees that BALTIC BIRD increases attractiveness of Jyväskylä Region as tourism destination as well as brings benefits for SMEs in long-term.

Inari Municipal Business & Development Nordica represents interests of Ivalo airport and the three Municipalities of North Lapland: Sodankylä, Inari and Utsjoki. Nordica has a good network in the area of Northernmost Europe and Barents Region including good contacts to both North Norway and Murmansk Region.

Role in the project

Nordica wants to strengthen the accessibility and economical growth in the area through participating in BALTIC BIRD. Main objective is to make good transnational contacts and establish networks in logistics, tourism and other international branches. BALTIC BIRD project supports Nordica’s aims in creating Artic Corridor from Europe to the Arctic Sea.

About the partner

The University of Oulu - Learning and Research Services (LRS) has broad experience in INTERREG projects and in partnerships with regional and local actors. LRS is linking together Council of Oulu Region´s goals in airport development and the interests of Oulu airport (Finnavia) and the regional Tourism development agencies in order to strengthen the airport’s position in Finland and wider.

Role in the project

LRS brings value added to the project by working with and for the Council of Oulu Region looking for new European partners for networking the Oulu airport (second largest in Finland) with partners in similar position (e.g. Berlin-Schönefeld).

LRS has strong relationships in the Baltic Sea area, especially to Germany and gives this competitive advantage to the benefit of the region and the Council of Oulu Region and has the capability to build up even bigger international projects for this field.

Regional Council of South Ostrobothnia (SO) is a statutory federation of municipalities. SO works in the fields of internationalization, regional planning and regional development.

Role in the project

As international project actor, the Regional Council of South Ostrobothnia has a wide experience in applying and implementing projects.

SO represents Seinäjoki airport. Population development in Seinäjoki has been extremely positive over past years and regional council is taking actions in order to improve situation at Seinäjoki airport.

SO is willing to share experiences and learn from other BALTIC BIRD regions. According to Regional plan, SO is pro-welfare region of entrepreneurship and culture that is attractive both nationally as well as internationally.

A living airport is vital success factor for the region. Therefore, SO is very willing to work on BALTIC BIRD project and find new joint solutions.
