Role in the project

The Ministry has taken over Lead Partnership in BALTIC BIRD and contributes by its wide INTERREG programme experiences. It is responsible for transnational project management/ administration by elaborating and providing overviews on activities as well as time schedules.

The Ministry is responsible for efficient internal and external communication procedures and project publicity, too. It acts as liaison partner to national and EU politicians to realize sustainable impact, awareness and visibility of the project at all political levels.

Through implementing BALTIC BIRD project, Ministry wants to intensify air transport linkages and accessibility from region Brandenburg with its high PAX potentials to remote Baltic Sea Region. New route development/ flight connections shall thus strengthen business market relations between region Brandenburg and peripheral Baltic Sea Regions and additionally improve competitiveness and attraction of locations in those regions.

About the partner

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH operates the airports Schönefeld and Tegel in Berlin. In 2012, the two airports handled around 25.3 million passengers, making Berlin the third-largest airport location in Germany.

In order to create the capacities required for the future, the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER) is currently being built in Schönefeld. All air traffic in Germany's capital region will be concentrated in the south-east of Berlin.

Role in the project

Berlin Brandenburg Airport brings in extensive know-how in network development analysis. By opening new airport BER, the organisation further strengthens its hub function especially to Northern and Eastern Europe. Therefore and due to the fast growing number of new flights and destinations, Berlin is the perfect location to offer additional connecting opportunities for flights from rather small O&D’s in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR). Berlin as ‘incoming magnet’ and German capital has the advantage to make routes from rather remote BSR more sustainable and to achieve higher stimulations compared to others.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport expects new marketing ideas and strategies to develop and introduce thin routes. Implementing a new flight service between Berlin and peripheral BSR would be perfect.

Additionally, Berlin Brandenburg Airport expect to improve knowledge on PSO/RDF and to get new ideas concerning network development analysis.
